The term car upholstery is typically in reference to the seats in your car, truck, or SUV. In all actuality, car upholstery is the entire interior of your vehicle including the roof, center console, and anywhere else that has fabric.

Dictionary.com defines upholstery as “the materials used to cushion and cover furniture.” Obviously, this situation applies to the different aspects of your vehicle’s interior, more specifically the seats. While your roof or center console can and should be reupholstered from time to time, they don’t typically get used or worn down as much as the seats. That’s why the simplest answer to the question “what is automotive upholstery” is the renewing and updating of the seats and trim in your vehicle.

Types of Car Upholstery

There are various kinds of vehicle upholstery you can use. Some people opt for traditional seat covers while others choose to get the fabric in their interior completely replaced with new car upholstery. At Katzkin, our leather car seats are not the same as traditional seat covers. We replace the fabric on your seats with completely new material and designs chosen by you.

We can also add temperature controls to your seats including ventilation and heat while we’re getting rid of your old material and replacing it with new, high-quality seats. If there are other parts of your interior that you’d like to replace such as the center console and armrests, we can do that as well. We install all of this for you at your request. Think of it like upholstery you would get in your home but applied to your car.

Traditional seat covers are a completely different type of car upholstery in that there’s no replacing or reupholstering the seats in your car. To put it simply, regular seat covers just wrap around the material you currently have in your interior. These are typically pretty easy to install but may need to be readjusted frequently.

The Reupholstery Process

Adding new automotive upholstery to your car, truck, or SUV is a great way to improve your driving experience while raising the value of it as well. The part of your interior that gets worn the worst is usually the seat material. When you’re reupholstering your vehicle, if you go with us, it all starts with choosing your design.

Here’s a quick overview of how the reupholstery process works if we’re fortunate enough to earn your business:

  • Input the make, model, and trim of your vehicle. If you don’t know the trim, that’s okay
  • Choose a design or come up with your own
  • Select a vehicle upholstery installer near you from our list. All we need is your zip code to provide you with the list of installers in your area
  • Schedule an appointment once the installer reaches out to you
  • Drop your vehicle off at the installer
  • Pick it up, usually within 24 hours, and enjoy our brand new auto upholstery!

What does the car upholstery installer do?

While your vehicle is at the installer, a skilled and experienced technician will remove the current fabric from your seats. In most cars, trucks, and SUVs, the upholstery is attached to the frame of the seat, typically with clips. The technician will detach the seats and then apply the new leather to your seats.

Can you do the auto upholstery yourself?

The short answer to this question is it depends. Some people attempt to do their own car upholstery but you should keep in mind that it can take anywhere from one whole day if you’re quick to several days to do it at home. It depends on how skilled you are. If you want Katzkin seats then we’ll install them for you. We don’t sell our seats for self-installment.

There are some companies that will sell leather seat kits for you to install yourself but they can be very difficult to install and usually take at least an entire day. Sometimes it can actually day a few days to install on your own. Plus, they can be difficult to install correctly and the last thing you want is to have to upholster your seats a second time because they aren’t on correctly.
